Saturday October 24th - HealthCampMinnesota
HealthCampMN will address two focus areas during the event:
1. Health care delivery and payment
2. Medical Devices
The sessions will focus on how technology, cost pressures, transparency, performance and the social web are impacting on health care. We are putting the specific panels together with a moderator, however, as is the format for HealthCamps, it is an interactive dynamic discussion. Panels and panelists serve to put some structure around an issue, but all audience members are part of the discussion.
The Schedule
8:00 – Morning Keynote – Lee Aase, Manager Syndications and Social Media, Mayo Clinic
9:00 – It’s your Health Deal With It!
Just about everyone is on the bandwagon of personal consumer behavior. Makes sense for smokers, but how far are individuals going to participate in their health care. In this session these are the initial issues the group will tackle. Retail consumer technology to address a new market of individual information and exchange, privacy vs. responsibility, immigration in the changing American landscape and its impact on health care. Motivating patients to self administer on the sites that are available now, simple lab tests to limit physician visit for less important situations.
10:00 – Can Device Manufacturers Benefit from Online Health Communities?
The explosion of aliment related social sites can be a goldmine of information for device manufacturers. The group in this session will address opportunities for expediting new medical devices and solutions presented by open access to a discussion among patients, physicians, and manufacturers. Other issues including social media and clinical trial candidates, patient focus groups 24/7 are they being tapped and supported by medical device manufacturers. Examples of how manufacturers are using the social web to promote products and go direct to patients.
11:00 - American Idol Doctors – Will It Come to This?
Will the obsession with performance and transparency reduce health care to American Idol Doctors? This session will raise some of the most challenging issues facing health care. Given physician report cards and patient blogging sites, what is the impact on taking on the toughest medical conditions? How will this impact the judges (consumers) decision on the physician they select? How are hospitals and clinics taking advantage of this trend and are they gaming the system?
Noon - Lunch and Keynote/Discussion - Rachele LaCount Chrismer - Her son
Zach fought a long battle with degenerative muscle and nervous system symptoms as a 1 year old infant. After many wrong diagnosises and Rachele's persistence to find an answer using the web and many online and offline networks, it was determined that Zach has Infantile Neuroxanal Dystrophy. Zach today is 9 years old.
Proceeds from HealthCampMinnesota will go to the NBIA Disorders organization to further research and understanding of Infantile Neuroxanal Dystrophy. NBIA is the disease afflicting Zach West, the son of the luncheon keynote speaker, Rachele Chrismer.
1:00 – Done
Location - University of Minnesota Mayo Auditorium

Medical Device Topics
- Key areas where manufacturers of medical devices are using social media. Why working or not? e.g. Diabetes Mine
- Limitations due to privacy, competitive, legal, or other parameters unique to medical device
- Advanced technologies or uses of mashups in medical device industry (public or private social media uses)
- Will health care reform impact device companies, if so how are device manufacturers seeking to impact the reform package?
Healthcare Delivery Topics
- Discuss fundamental reasons for and against using social media from a healthcare delivery perspective – ( healthcare delivery facilities, hospitals, clinics and others have issues that are unique, this session will get them out on the table as a foundation for the discussion)
- Discussion of general uses of social media with examples of effective and not so effective (we should break this out by tool Facebook, Blogs, Twitter, YouTube, others )
- Working with the healthcare delivery management team (this is not just how do you position social media to the hospital president, but what metrics to use, what will determine success?)
